Explain the use of consonant and dissonant intervals in 2:1 counterpoint.

The interval for the up beats can be 2, 4, or 7 only if it is a passing tone or a neighbor tone. If the up beats are not passing or neighboring, then the interval must be 3, 5, or 6.

Another words all dissonant intervals must be place on the weak beat and approached and left by step so that they resolve. Consonant intervals including the 5, 8, 3, and 6 can be on both beats.
